‘Informal’ courier, Andrzej Slyk caught with €140,000 in cash jailed for 33 months

A Polish man, Andrzej Slyk, has been sentenced to 33 months in prison after being caught with a staggering €140,000 in cash, which was deemed to be the proceeds of crime. This incident unfolded when Gardaí conducted a search at a residence in Drimnagh, Dublin, where Slyk was temporarily staying on a friend’s couch.

On August 31, 2023, Gardaí arrived at the location expecting to find cannabis but instead stumbled upon Slyk’s rucksack. Inside were two Tesco bags filled with cash. Garda Simon Cadam provided testimony in Dublin Circuit Criminal Court detailing how Slyk initially claimed he found the money on a car ferry from Poland. However, he later admitted that he received the package from two individuals he met in Dublin’s city center.

Slyk pleaded guilty to possessing the proceeds of crime, an offense that carries a maximum penalty of 14 years in prison. His defense attorney, Eoin Lawlor SC, argued that Slyk acted recklessly by not checking the contents of the package before accepting it as part of his informal courier work. This lack of due diligence ultimately led to his arrest.

The court heard that Slyk had been working as an “informal courier,” transporting items from Poland to Ireland without proper checks or balances. His defense highlighted that he was unaware of the significant amount of cash he was carrying until shortly before the Gardaí arrived.

Judge Martin Nolan recognized Slyk’s recklessness but also noted that he had no previous convictions in either Ireland or Poland. The judge set a headline sentence of six years but ultimately reduced it to 33 months after considering mitigating factors such as Slyk’s lack of criminal history and his legitimate work efforts.

Since his arrest, Slyk has faced significant restrictions on his freedom. He has been unable to leave Ireland or continue his courier activities and has resorted to living in a caravan while taking on odd jobs for income.

This case serves as a cautionary tale about the risks associated with informal courier work and the importance of due diligence. Slyk’s situation underscores how easily one can become entangled in criminal activity without proper awareness or oversight. While he may have seen himself as simply helping others by transporting items, this incident highlights the potential dangers and legal ramifications that can arise from such decisions.

As communities continue to grapple with issues surrounding crime and safety, this case is a reminder of the need for vigilance and responsibility in all aspects of life—especially when it comes to handling unknown packages or engaging in informal business practices.
